New publication: IUCN Green List Indicators tested in Natura 2000 site Lendspitz-Maiernigg
Positive feedback for the Natura 2000 site management Lendspitz-Maiernigg
Since 2012 the Natura 2000 site Lendspitz-Maiernigg is managed within the scope of the City meets Nature project.
‘For the last 7 years different measures have been implemented according to international standards of management of protected areas. We are very happy about the recent positive feedback’, states project leader Susanne Glatz-Jorde.
In the IUCN Life Project ‘LIFE Green List for N2K’ the Natura 2000 site was evaluated using the criteria of the Green List Sustainability Standard. The project’s aim was and is to adapt the indicators of the IUCN Green List Sustainability Standards to Natura 2000 sites and EU requirements.
The evaluation by the IUCN and the project mentors was very positive. The Green List criteria were met to a high degree showcasing the holistic management approach which normally is unusual for Natura 2000 sites.
Challenges arise from the set-up in an urban area at the town’s outskirts as well as from a high demand to utilise it and restrictions regarding ecological improvements.
Conclusion: The example of the Lendspitz-Maiernigg site indicates that the here implemented holistic management approach is suitable for Natura 2000 sites, especially for those located in urban areas and thus in need of continuous management which require a broad governance approach.
